Running a business with your family is a real blessing. You get to work with the people you care the most about. You need to build a strong foundation if you hope to pass it on to the next generation. Our business is called Universal Paper & Plastics. We manufacture a wide variety of tissue paper products, which include, bathroom tissue, household towels, hankies, serviettes, napkins and water-based inks.
We have been evolving and growing in Pretoria for the past 67 years. When my grandfather joined the company, he made it his own and developed a culture around personal accountability. Then, it was my father’s turn. He loved working with the machines and found ways to improve efficiency, taking our company from humble business practices to a world class operation.
Together, my brother, Jonathan and I, continue to innovate to better satisfy our customers.
And over the past ten years, we have increased revenue ten-fold. Everything we do has got to be meaningful. Quality, design, production… it’s all about building trust. That’s how we’ll sustain the company for the next generation.
To stand the test of time, you also have to find the right partners and we found a great partner in Sage. Before Sage, our system only provided basic information. Today, we use Sage for accurate, real-time forecasting and for insights and accounting. Our solution is fast and thanks to our Sage partner, completely customised to our business. Now, when we get to the market first, we’re putting even greater distance between ourselves and the competition.
Serving our community is something we all take great pride in. That’s something our great grandfather did that we still do today. Our business is more than Universal Paper & Plastics, it’s our family name and our values that carry on. Integrity, commitment, empowerment, excellence. We have been building this business for 67 years and we’re just getting started.
